Morse, Samuel F.B. Gallery of the Louvre.
1833
Completed in New York, the 54 square-foot canvas includes miniature reproductions of 38 paintings from the museum’s collection as well as Roman and Greek sculpture and pottery. It is created both to allow Morse to show off his talent and generate income from paid admissions to a traveling exhibition tour. The tour is canceled, however, after showings in New York and New Haven due to lack of interest. The painting sells for $3,250,000 in 1982, the highest sum ever for a painting by an American up to that time. It is today owned by the Terra Foundation for American Art in Chicago.
